Probiotics and Intestinal Functions

Lactose Digestion | Dannon Probiotics Center

Because of the probiotic bacteria they contain, fermented milk products, such as yogurt, can help decrease the symptoms of lactose intolerance. Live and active bacterial cultures in yogurt (e.g. Lactobacillus bulgaricus) reduce lactose content by metabolizing some of it to lactic acid. The probiotic bacteria in yogurt that survive passage to the intestinal tract also provide additional lactase enzyme activity in situ.
