There is growing evidence that the intestinal microflora plays an important role in the development of IBD. Research into the role that probiotics may play is in its early stages, but experts believe that manipulation of the intestinal microflora may play an important role in helping in the management of ulcerative colitis and pouchitis (Bruzzese et al., 2004; Marteau et al., 2004; Marteau et al., 2004; Sartor, 2004).
